Light Up the Night: The New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade & Fireworks at Whitefish Mountain Resort

If there is one tradition that truly captures the magic of winter in Montana, it’s the New Year’s Eve Torchlight Parade & Fireworks at Whitefish Mountain Resort. As the sun sets on 2025, the slopes of Big Mountain transform into a glowing masterpiece, offering a spectacle that has become a “must-do” for locals and visitors alike.

A Ribbon of Light on Ed’s Run

As twilight falls, all eyes turn toward the mountain. Starting at 5:45 PM, a silent, glowing ribbon of light begins to descend Ed’s Run. This “ribbon” is actually a procession of expert skiers and riders carrying brightly lit torches, weaving their way down the mountain in a synchronized display of skill and holiday spirit.

It is a mesmerizing sight that perfectly sets the stage for the grand finale.

The Big Bang: Fireworks Under the Big Sky

Immediately following the parade, the sky above the Upper Village erupts in a massive fireworks display. Framed by the snow-covered pines and the silhouette of the Northern Rockies, it’s a breathtaking way to celebrate the final moments of the year.

Because the festivities wrap up by 6:30 PM, it’s the ultimate “early bird” celebration—spectacular enough to wow the adults, but early enough that the kids can enjoy the show before heading home for cocoa (or before the grown-ups head out for a late-night party!).

💡 Pro-Tips for the Best Experience

  • The Best Seat in the House: For the absolute best views of the parade and the fireworks, head to the patio of Ed & Mully’s. It’s located right at the base of Ed’s Run in the Upper Village, placing you directly in the “splash zone” for the mountain views.

  • Arrival & Parking: The village gets busy! Aim to arrive by 5:00 PM to find parking and secure your spot. Remember, the S.N.O.W. Bus is a great free option to avoid the parking scramble.

  • Layer Up: You’ll be standing outside for about an hour. Wear your warmest boots and don’t forget the hand warmers!

  • Night Skiing Note: Please be aware that Chair 2 typically closes around 5:00 PM to allow for parade preparations, but other lifts like Chairs 3 and 6 often remain open for those who want to get a few last turns in.

Don’t Get Left in the Cold: The Flathead Valley Christmas Day Survival Guide

Christmas in Whitefish Montana

While most of the Flathead Valley settles in for a quiet day at home, there are plenty of ways to make the most of Christmas Day in our winter wonderland. Whether you’re looking to carve some turns, enjoy a world-class buffet, or find a peaceful spot in the park, here is your 2025 guide to what’s open on December 25th.

⛷️ Outdoor Adventures

If your ideal Christmas involves fresh air and mountain views, you’re in luck. The valley’s major recreation spots are ready for you.

  • Whitefish Mountain Resort: The lifts spin from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It’s a local tradition to spot Santas and elves skiing down the slopes. Note that the S.N.O.W. Bus usually runs on its holiday schedule, making it easy to get from downtown Whitefish to the Village.

  • Blacktail Mountain: Typically open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It’s often a bit quieter than Big Mountain, offering a “local” vibe and incredible views of a frozen Flathead Lake.

  • Glacier National Park: The park is open 24/7, 365 days a year. While the visitor centers are closed on Christmas Day, you can still drive to Apgar Village or Lake McDonald Lodge (exterior access) for a snowshoe or a quiet winter hike. Note: You still need a park pass, which can be purchased online or at self-pay stations.

🍽️ Christmas Dining & Drinks

Forget the dishes! Several premier valley restaurants offer special holiday menus, but reservations are essential.

Local Tip: Many bars in downtown Kalispell and Whitefish open their doors in the evening (around 6:00 PM or 8:00 PM) for those looking for a “nightcap” after family festivities.

🏛️ Local Sightseeing & Events

While museums like the Conrad Mansion are closed on Christmas Day itself, the grounds are often open for a festive stroll to see the exterior lights.

  • Self-Guided Light Tours: Take a drive through the Bigfork Village (the Christmas Village of Montana) or the Kalispell East Side to see the historic homes decked out in lights.

  • Worship Services: Most valley churches (like St. Matthew’s in Kalispell or Whitefish Assembly) hold special Christmas morning services.

💡 Know Before You Go

  1. Gas & Groceries: Most major grocery stores (Safeway, Smith’s, Albertsons, Costco) will be closed. Ensure you have your essentials by the 24th.

  2. Reservations: If you plan to eat out, call today. Tables for Christmas Day often fill up weeks in advance.

  3. Weather: Check the MDT Road Report if you’re traveling between towns, as snow plows may have limited holiday shifts.

Thanksgiving in Flathead Valley, Montana: A Time for Tradition and Togetherness

Thanksgiving in the Flathead Valley, Montana: A Time for Tradition and Togetherness

Nestled amidst the panoramic vistas of Northwest Montana, the Flathead Valley comes alive with the spirit of Thanksgiving. This cherished holiday is a time for Flathead Valley residents and visitors alike to embrace the warmth of community, the richness of tradition, and the bounty of the harvest season.

The air is crisp, the leaves have turned, and the majestic backdrop of snow-capped mountains reminds us of the upcoming winter. Yet, before the snow fully blankets the valley, Thanksgiving provides a golden moment of pause—a time to gather, reflect, and give thanks.

Flathead Valley’s Thanksgiving is characterized by its unique blend of traditional festivities and local flavor. The day might start with a community turkey trot, where laughter and light-hearted competition pave the way for a day of indulgence. Families and friends gather around tables laden with local produce—huckleberry pies, fresh-baked sourdough, and, of course, the star of the day, turkey, perhaps even a local wild one, prepared with time-honored recipes handed down through generations.

The community’s closeness is mirrored in the events of the day. Local churches and organizations host free dinners, ensuring everyone has a place to go. Volunteers spend their mornings preparing and serving meals, embodying the spirit of giving.

As the day unfolds, outdoor enthusiasts might take advantage of the Valley’s natural beauty with a scenic hike or a family stroll along the shores of Flathead Lake, working up an appetite or walking off the feast.

The evening brings a sense of serenity as the sun sets behind the peaks, and families gather around fireplaces. Stories are shared, memories are made, and gratitude is expressed for the simple joys and the spectacular setting that is Flathead Valley.

As the stars begin to twinkle in the Montana sky, one can’t help but feel a deep sense of connection—to the land, to the community, and to the timeless tradition of Thanksgiving.

It’s Christmas Tree Time!

Montana Christmas Tree

It’s the most wonderful time of year, especially in Montana, when the first flurries of snow start to fall down from the sky. The weather is not too cold and definitely not too hot, but perfect for a hot cup of cocoa with marshmallows on top. Now that Thanksgiving has past, for many households it is time to put up the Christmas Tree. Pull out the Christmas Tree stand, find the tree skirt and all of the ornaments and of course purchase some more of the ornament hooks, where they go we’ll never know. So, in Montana, the real question is do you purchase a Christmas Tree or do you go and get your own?

Christmas Tree

Christmas Tree – Cutting Down Your Own

Before you head out to the parks and find the perfect Christmas Tree, you actually will need to get a permit. You can actually cut down up to three trees from Thursday, October 13, 2022 through Saturday, December 31, 2022, if you get a Flathead National Forest Christmas Tree Permit. You can get your permit online – HERE – but it will cost a service fee of $2.50, but if you go to any National Forest Office, you can get a permit without the service fee. In Kalispell, you can go to the Flathead National Forest Supervisor’s Office located at 650 Wolfpack Way, Kalispell, MT 59901. Click HERE to see all locations.

It is very important to make sure that you go to the right place to select your Christmas Tree. If you are unsure of the Forest boundary, maps showing ownership are available at Flathead National Forest offices – Click HERE. Do not cut on private land, in wilderness areas, designated campgrounds, or existing tree plantations.

Did you know that you can actually help the forest by cutting down your own Christmas Tree? “Christmas trees cut to thin overcrowded stands can be beneficial. As young stands of trees mature, they are constantly competing for more space. By cutting your Christmas tree from dense groups around the more vigorous trees, the remaining trees will grow faster to make our future forest,” according to the Forest Service.  Tree species that are prohibited from harvesting for Christmas trees: whitebark pine, white pine, western red cedar.

Recreation.gov
https://www.recreation.gov/

Need to Know
Where to Cut Your Tree

  • Your permit allows you to cut Christmas trees on National Forest land in Montana and Northern Idaho.
  • Do not cut on private land, in wilderness areas, designated campgrounds, or posted timber sales.
  • Please cut your Christmas tree from an overcrowded stand of trees in meadows.
  • Do not cut trees within 100 feet of main roads, streams, or recreation sites.

Selecting Your Tree
Each forest has limitations on the size of the tree you can cut and the species of trees that are permitted. See below to help you measure and choose a tree that meets your permit’s guidelines.

  • Tree Height: 12 feet maximum.
  • Stump height: 6 inches maximum. Remove and scatter all limbs from the portion of the tree you leave behind.
  • No cutting of 5 needle pines. (i.e. 5 needles in one cluster)
  • Take the whole tree. Do not remove the top of the tree; cut down the entire tree.

If snow is on the ground, remove it from around the stump so you can accurately measure the stump and tree height.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

the rocky Horror picture show

Dammit, Janet! The cult classic comes to Whitefish in this limited showing on screen – and live on stage!

Join us as we show the outrageous 1975 classic film while performing its music live on stage. Get ready to yell, laugh, sing, throw things, and do the Time Warp again!

PLEASE NOTE – This is Rocky Horror. It’s loud, it’s raunchy, it’s not for the kids.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is renowned for its audience participation roles at different times and scenes during the film.  There will be ATP-appropriate props available for purchase online or at the theatre the night of the show for purchase as a $5 kit.  To encourage the safety and enjoyment of the film by all in attendance, any bags brought to the theater could be subjected to a search for inappropriate/non-allowable items.

The $5 kits include:

  • Balloon, Glow Stick, Newspaper, Time Warp Flier, Rubber Glove, Noisemaker, Confetti Popper, Toilet Paper, Party Hat, Sponge, Cards, Instructions, Bag.

So now we know what the kit will include, we’re new to this thing.  How do we use them, which ones that aren’t in the kit are also allowed OR are not allowed, and at what point in the movie do we use them?

This movie is all about participation but we also want to make sure the theater isn’t damaged, wrecked, or burned down (under NO circumstances should an open flame ever be used within the theatre).  People are absolutely encouraged to dress up and have fun, but there are just a few things we cannot and will not allow and they are listed below along with the items included in the $5 kit, as well as when to use them.

Another thing we ask is to please not throw things at the screen, it’s not new for sure, but it is functional and we want to keep it that way.  Besides, throwing things at the screen is pretty much just not cool.
