It’s the most wonderful time of year, especially in Montana, when the first flurries of snow start to fall down from the sky. The weather is not too cold and definitely not too hot, but perfect for a hot cup of cocoa with marshmallows on top. Now that Thanksgiving has past, for many households it is time to put up the Christmas Tree. Pull out the Christmas Tree stand, find the tree skirt and all of the ornaments and of course purchase some more of the ornament hooks, where they go we’ll never know. So, in Montana, the real question is do you purchase a Christmas Tree or do you go and get your own?
Christmas Tree – Cutting Down Your Own
Before you head out to the parks and find the perfect Christmas Tree, you actually will need to get a permit. You can actually cut down up to three trees from Thursday, October 13, 2022 through Saturday, December 31, 2022, if you get a Flathead National Forest Christmas Tree Permit. You can get your permit online – HERE – but it will cost a service fee of $2.50, but if you go to any National Forest Office, you can get a permit without the service fee. In Kalispell, you can go to the Flathead National Forest Supervisor’s Office located at 650 Wolfpack Way, Kalispell, MT 59901. Click HERE to see all locations.
It is very important to make sure that you go to the right place to select your Christmas Tree. If you are unsure of the Forest boundary, maps showing ownership are available at Flathead National Forest offices – Click HERE. Do not cut on private land, in wilderness areas, designated campgrounds, or existing tree plantations.
Did you know that you can actually help the forest by cutting down your own Christmas Tree? “Christmas trees cut to thin overcrowded stands can be beneficial. As young stands of trees mature, they are constantly competing for more space. By cutting your Christmas tree from dense groups around the more vigorous trees, the remaining trees will grow faster to make our future forest,” according to the Forest Service. Tree species that are prohibited from harvesting for Christmas trees: whitebark pine, white pine, western red cedar.
Your permit allows you to cut Christmas trees on National Forest land in Montana and Northern Idaho.
Do not cut on private land, in wilderness areas, designated campgrounds, or posted timber sales.
Please cut your Christmas tree from an overcrowded stand of trees in meadows.
Do not cut trees within 100 feet of main roads, streams, or recreation sites.
Selecting Your Tree
Each forest has limitations on the size of the tree you can cut and the species of trees that are permitted. See below to help you measure and choose a tree that meets your permit’s guidelines.
Tree Height: 12 feet maximum.
Stump height: 6 inches maximum. Remove and scatter all limbs from the portion of the tree you leave behind.
No cutting of 5 needle pines. (i.e. 5 needles in one cluster)
Take the whole tree. Do not remove the top of the tree; cut down the entire tree.
If snow is on the ground, remove it from around the stump so you can accurately measure the stump and tree height.

Dammit, Janet! The cult classic comes to Whitefish in this limited showing on screen – and live on stage!
Join us as we show the outrageous 1975 classic film while performing its music live on stage. Get ready to yell, laugh, sing, throw things, and do the Time Warp again!
PLEASE NOTE – This is Rocky Horror. It’s loud, it’s raunchy, it’s not for the kids.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is renowned for its audience participation roles at different times and scenes during the film. There will be ATP-appropriate props available for purchase online or at the theatre the night of the show for purchase as a $5 kit. To encourage the safety and enjoyment of the film by all in attendance, any bags brought to the theater could be subjected to a search for inappropriate/non-allowable items.
The $5 kits include:
Balloon, Glow Stick, Newspaper, Time Warp Flier, Rubber Glove, Noisemaker, Confetti Popper, Toilet Paper, Party Hat, Sponge, Cards, Instructions, Bag.
So now we know what the kit will include, we’re new to this thing. How do we use them, which ones that aren’t in the kit are also allowed OR are not allowed, and at what point in the movie do we use them?
This movie is all about participation but we also want to make sure the theater isn’t damaged, wrecked, or burned down (under NO circumstances should an open flame ever be used within the theatre). People are absolutely encouraged to dress up and have fun, but there are just a few things we cannot and will not allow and they are listed below along with the items included in the $5 kit, as well as when to use them.
Another thing we ask is to please not throw things at the screen, it’s not new for sure, but it is functional and we want to keep it that way. Besides, throwing things at the screen is pretty much just not cool.

The Foley family & Foley Family Wines has had a strong Whitefish connection for years, including controlling ownership in Whitefish Mountain Resort and Glacier Restaurant Group, which includes MacKenzie River Pizza, Craggy Range Bar & Grill, Ciao Mambo, and Latitude 48, as well as the Vegas Golden Knights NHL hockey team. William Foley’s love of good wine led him to the wine industry. There he started Foley Food & Wine Society to celebrate three of life’s greatest passions – world-class wines, exquisite cuisine, and amazing experiences. Foley Food and Wine has a unique and diverse portfolio of wineries in California, the Pacific Northwest, New Zealand, France and Argentina. Each has its own individual identity, style and distinctive personality.
Founded in 1989, Melville is a family-owned and operated estate winery with its roots in Sonoma County’s Knights Valley, where Ron Melville grew high-quality and greatly sought-after grapes. In 1996, Ron’s desire to grow cold-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah brought Melville Vineyards to the Sta. Rita Hills, located in the Western Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County. Today, Ron and his son, Chad Melville, uphold Melville’s tradition as one of the most highly-regarded estates in California.
Since 1909 the Battuellos have believed that great wines are grown by careful hands and an intimate knowledge of the land fostered by working the soil vintage after vintage. To that end, the Battuello family has cultivated the same rocky soil in St. Helena for over 100 years, producing excellent grapes for award-winning wines in the region. For five generations the Battuello Family has been growing vines in the renowned Napa Valley. Battuello Vineyards, in St. Helena, was founded in 1909 by Matteo Battuello and his wife Serafina, who immigrated to California from Northern Italy. Four generations later, the vineyard is operated and managed by Craig and his son, Dave. They believe still that great wines are grown by careful hands and an intimate knowledge of the land fostered by working the soil vintage after vintage. That is how the family has been able to cultivate the same rocky soil in St. Helena for over 100 years and continue to produce excellent grapes for award-winning wines in this region.
Chef Andy Blanton Andy Blanton is one of the most acclaimed chefs in Montana and the Pacific Northwest for that matter. Blanton, the executive chef and owner of Café Kandahar, is a four-time semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s best chef in the Northwest region, and his Big Mountain restaurant has carved out a widely praised culinary reputation for excellence. Blanton moved to Whitefish in the fall of 1999 from New Orleans, where he worked at two prestigious institutions: Commanders Palace and Brigtsen’s. But like many in the industry, he worked his way up from the bottom, starting as a dishwasher in Virginia Beach during high school before moving up to prep cook, cook and culinary school. He describes Café Kandahar fare as thoughtfully constructed cuisine that essentially incorporates a variety of styles and techniques, both classic and modern. It doesn’t really categorize menu options or the restaurant into a specific cuisine. Chef Andy adheres to the farm-to-table approach and cooking with local ingredients as much as possible and without a lot of similarities on the menu, meaning each dish has its own composed features.
Chef Earl James Reynolds Chef Earl is a Whitefish native. Originally planning to be a painter, he switched his canvas to the plate and attended Seattle Central Culinary academy. He previously worked at Canlis in Seattle, and Restaurant Trokay in Truckee, California. Upon moving back to Montana, Chef Earl became the Sous Chef at Tupelo Grille in Whitefish, and was the Executive Chef at the Belton Chalet in Glacier National Park. Chef Earl was recently named the Executive Chef at Stone Hill Kitchen+Bar in Bigfork.
Chef Christian Moreno The Moreno Halphen family has been in the food and coffee industry for over 80 years, and their love and dedication to the craft is always evident, from the flavors in the menu to the décor of the Café itself. Their story began with their maternal grandmother, who founded Finca Don Bosco, a coffee estate on the Talamanca Range between Panama and Costa Rica. Sonny and Choly Moreno inherited this family business, and they, along with their four sons, elevated the estate’s coffee production both domestically and internationally. They created an outstanding product while always staying focused on their values: tradition, conservation, sustainability and respect for the land. Today, the family tradition is being carried forward by award-winning Executive Chef, Christian Moreno, from Swift Creek Cafe, who earned his degree from the top French pastry program, “Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Påtisserie” in Yssingeaux, France. He brings to Whitefish the extensive culinary experience he gained while working for and training under world-class chefs across the United States.

Rain, Rain Go Away….those mosquitoes are swarming everyday. The rain has definitely been falling in the Flathead Valley area lately and it has brought lots and lots of mosquitoes. These aggressive vampires are swarming the streets looking for their next victims especially during the dawn and dusk hours. This year has been worse than other years because the snowpack increased from March through May combined with a hot June and lots of rain resulted in an increase in mosquito egg hatching. Check out these tips to find out why mosquitoes bite some people more than others and the best ways to avoid getting bitten by them.
Why do mosquitoes seem to bite some people more than others?
When it comes to mosquito bites, it seems that there are two kinds of people: Those who get bites all the time and those who rarely get bitten. There are scientific reason why some people seem to be luckier than others. About 20 percent of people are especially delicious for mosquitoes, according to scientists. Below find a few factors that could explain why you might get bitten much more than the person sitting next to you.
Blood Type
Your blood type may have an impact on how often you get bitten by mosquitoes. One study found that people with the blood O got bitten more often than any other blood type. The study said that people with the blood type O got bitten almost twice as much as those with blood type A.
Carbon Dioxide & Exercise
Mosquitoes use carbon dioxide as an indicator that a host is nearby. This means your metabolism, or the amount of CO2 your body releases as it burns energy, is a big factor when it comes to attracting mosquitoes. In addition to carbon dioxide, mosquitoes find victims by smelling the lactic acid, uric acid, ammonia and other substances you sweat out. They also like people with higher body temperatures. Since exercise increases the buildup of lactic acid and heat in your body, it likely makes you stand out to the insects. So you may think twice about going for a run during mosquito season.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant you could attract roughly twice as many mosquito bites as others, according another study. Pregnant woman exhale about 21 percent more carbon dioxide and are on average about 1.26 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than others.
Clothing Color
Believe it or not, but some experts suggest the color of clothing may also attract mosquitoes. They say mosquitoes use vision (along with scent) to find people. This means wearing colors that stand out such as black, dark blue or red may make you easier to find.
Best Ways To Avoid Mosquito Bites
There are several steps you can take to avoid mosquito bites and to keep them away from your home and family.
Remove All Standing Water – Standing water is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos. Mosquitos will breed in trash cans, plant pots, and even old tires that have water in them. If you eliminate the breeding ground around your home, you will reduce the chance of getting bitten.
Insect Repellent – There are lots of different types of insect repellent available. The EPA recommends using repellents that contain 15-30% DEET or 15% picaridin. Check the label for the product’s EPA approval.
Clothing – Avoid mosquito bites with the right clothing. Wear clothing that has long sleeves and pants if you are gardening or hiking in mosquito-prone areas. There are also clothing lines that are bug-resistant that you may want consider as well. Wear tightly woven clothing that is tough for mosquitos to bite through.
Timing – It is important to stay indoors at dusk and dawn. Mosquitos are a lot more active during these times, so it is best to avoid them.
Fans – If you are hosting a summer barbecue, consider using fans. Not only will the fans help with keeping away mosquitos, they will also keep all of the guests cooler.
Repellents – Consider using Tiki Torches with Citronella or even setting up mosquito electronic insect killers to minimize the mosquitos.
